The Clock Shadow / Milwaukee, WI

The Clock Shadow is the successful transformation of an industrial brownfield into a sustainable building that achieves economic development, social justice, environmental restoration, and cultural celebration. The new Clock Shadow building houses an urban cheese factory, an artisan ice cream maker, and specialty cheese spread maker on the ground floor. The upper three floors contain three nonprofit organizations – known as the Healing Collective – that provide services to an underserved population.

Sustainability was infused throughout the design, including a green roof complete with garden beds that provide fresh produce for the community. Salvaged materials, including cream city brick, reclaimed wood siding and pickle vats, and steel panels, were incorporated into the design of the exterior. The result is a green building that integrates historic, found objects into a contemporary façade.
