Continuum, in association with Machado and Silvetti Associates, designed a three-story, 86,800-square-foot addition to the Chazen Museum of Art at UW Madison that doubled the exhibition space by 30,000 square feet, allowing collections formerly in storage to be displayed. The new wing includes a 5,000-square-foot gallery for temporary exhibitions, a secure loading and receiving area, 5,000 square feet of art storage and exhibition preparation space, as well as teaching spaces such as the object study room, print study room, and the auditorium. In addition, a dead-end street was converted into a pedestrian mall to create an Arts Plaza that links to the East Campus Mall.

Taking cues from the existing building, the addition is, in many ways, its fraternal twin. The team was successful in achieving the client’s goals of providing not only the students and faculty with enhanced art space, but  creating space that benefits the entire city.
