Milwaukee Job Corps Center Gets Finishing Touches
Friday, April 2, 2010

One year ago, ground was broken for the first Job Corps Center in Milwaukee. Since then eight buildings have emerged that will be substantially complete by June.  The welcome center, administration, student services, and gym/recreation buildings are getting final interior finishes and are being cleaned up for furniture move-in while the education building’s floors and ceilings are being installed. The cafeteria is starting to show its purpose as food service equipment is integrated. The two 136-bed dormitories are getting finishing touches as well.  As the buildings near completion the site is also taking shape and will soon incorporate concrete walkways carving out green space for landscaping.

Not only is this project getting local attention, its campus design is gaining national recognition as a model for future centers. The campus was meticulously laid out to differentiate the bustling day activities from the slower-paced evening activities. The buildings all face inwards and together create an applied learning atmosphere where outdoor spaces promote personal interaction. The design will greatly contribute to community building when the 300+ students start occupying the campus in fall.

The entire project was brilliantly designed and managed by Continuum Architects + Planners and with 80% of the construction complete there have been absolutely no change orders!  In the end, the project will significantly impact the City of Milwaukee and the State of Wisconsin. “I think people should know what Job Corps is, how big of a program it is and how it is helping these young adults,” stated Corey Lapworth, the project manager. “It’s really pretty remarkable.”
