Restoring a Once Popular Central Gathering Place

Renovating UWM’s 9,500-square-foot Fireside Lounge by upgrading the interior finishes restored the lounge to its historical role as the central meeting space in the student union. The design allowed direct traffic flow between the ballroom, fireside lounge and elevators, making the area more accessible and usable for group activities.
Also part of the $1.33 million renovation was the reconfiguration of the kitchen and additional loading dock access on the ground floor. At one time this was the campus’s main production kitchen. When this function was moved to Sandburg Hall, the kitchen became inefficient and underutilized, so the goal was to reduce its size and renovate the space to meet current student union needs.
